May 11- Betts propels Red Sox, Royals blank Rays

Mookie Betts hit a 3-run go ahead homer in the 9th inning to lift the Boston Red Sox over the Milwaukee Brewers. Both teams missed opportunities in the 8th inning when it was tied 1-1.
For the Red Sox, starter Eduardo Rodriguez went 6.0 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits and no walks, while striking out 5. Brewers starter Jimmy Nelson tossed 6.2 innings, allowing 1 run (0 earned) on 4 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 8. Craig Kimbrel claimed the win after pitching the last 1.2 innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 5.
The Red Sox are now 18-16 after the win, 3rd in the AL East, 4.5 games behind the Yankees. The Sox will go home tomorrow to face the Rays at 4:10 p.m. PT.
The Brewers fall to 18-17, 3rd in the NL Central, 2.0 games behind the Cardinals. The Brewers will stay at home to face the Mets tomorrow at 5:10 p.m. PT.

Jason Vargas tossed 7.0 shutout innings as the Kansas City Royals blanked the Tampa Bay Rays. Vargas, the league leader for the lowest ERA, lowered his ERA even further to 1.01 after the game. He allowed 3 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 4.
Rays starter Jake Odorizzi went 6.0 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks, striking out 4. The Rays bullpen allowed the other 5 runs. Whit Merrifeld went deep and notched 2 RBIs for the Royals. Salvador Perez also drove in two with a double in the 8th inning.
The Royals improve to 13-21, still last in the AL Central, 5.5 games behind the Indians. The Royals will return home to face the Orioles tomorrow at 5:15 p.m. PT.
The Rays sit at 17-20 after the loss, 4th in the AL East, 7.0 games behind the Yankees. The Rays will travel to Boston to play the Red Sox tomorrow at 4:10 p.m. PT.
